Refractive surgery

Intraocular lenses

When the ophthalmologist determines that the patient is not a suitable candidate for laser surgery, there is another alternative option, refractive surgery with an intraocular lens (ICL).

In this case, the specialist must assess in a first consultation whether their ocular characteristics are adequate to allow the implantation of this lens, by carrying out a series of previous tests.

What are ICL® lenses

¿Qué son las lentes?

The ICL intraocular lens (implantable collamer lens) represents a new generation in the correction of refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism), which has established itself as a recommended option in patients who have not yet developed eyestrain (especially young people between 20 and 40 years old) or in whom, due to the characteristics of their eye, they have a high alcohol content or corneal thickness that is inadequate for this type of intervention.

These are soft, flexible lenses, also known as phakic lenses, that are implanted in the eye between the iris (colored part of the eye) and the lens. Unlike other vision correction procedures, ICL lenses are placed without the need to replace the crystalline lens and respecting the corneal tissue, given the precision in their access. In this way, two important ocular structures such as the lens and the cornea are preserved for the future.

The lens is designed to fit naturally in the eyes, providing clear, quality vision and allowing the patient to break free from the visual limitations that glasses and contact lenses have.

Ventajas lentes

The main features of the ICL intraocular lens are:

  • High compatibility with the natural tissues of the eye thanks to colamer, an exclusive material that contains collagen.
  • Soft and flexible structure.
  • Great adaptability to the eye due to the material with which they are manufactured.
  • Personalized (for each eye and each person).
  • They can correct several visual abnormalities in the same procedure.
  • They offer a much wider range of grades.
  • They provide protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation by preventing UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the sensitive area of the eye.

Advantages of the ICL Lens Procedure

  • Outpatient surgery.
  • Short duration (approximately 10 minutes).
  • Painless, without stitches or punctures (topical anesthesia drops).
  • Efficiency in the results and rapid recovery of visual quality.
  • Removable surgery unlike laser, as it can be removed without damaging any eye tissue.
  • Absence of dry eye syndrome by not remodeling the corneal tissue.

Smart Operating Room:

Say goodbye to glasses with the best technology

The Smart Operating Room is a great technological advance that, thanks to the interconnection between all the teams involved in the surgery process, offers fast, safe and personalized surgeries based on the specific needs of each person.

In the case of surgery with ICL lenses, the Smart Operating Room connects all the equipment involved in the intervention process to each other. The diagnostic equipment (Argos biometer) detects and measures all ocular structures by creating a “3D reconstruction” of the patient’s eye and performing an exact calculation of the power required for the lens. After all this information is obtained, it is transmitted directly to the smart microscope. This has an image guidance system (Verion) that assists the surgeon in orienting the lens on the correct axis, an issue especially relevant in the case of patients with astigmatism. In this way, the intervention is carried out with unprecedented accuracy and in a way that is absolutely adapted to the specific needs of each patient.

This technology, pioneering and unique in the Balearic Islands, provides greater precision and absolute personalisation to these interventions, both in the preoperative phases and in surgical acts. Thanks to this, it offers “tailor-made” and robotic eye surgeries, in which there is more safety and less dependence on the human factor.

YOUR OPERATION WITH ICL LENSES STEP BY STEP

SOLVE MYOPIA, HYPEROPIA OR ASTIGMATISM IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS:

Step 1

Eye preparation

On the day of the operation, the doctor will administer some drops to dilate the pupils and anesthetize the eyes.

STEP 2

Lens Implantation

The doctor will make a small incision at the base of the cornea painlessly, thanks to anesthesia, to insert the ICL lens.

STEP 3

Lens Placement

After inserting the lens, your doctor will make adjustments to ensure that it has been placed correctly in your eye.

STEP 4

Postoperative

At this point the intervention will have ended. Your doctor will prescribe drops to prevent infection and indicate follow-up visits to make.
