Frequently Asked Questions about PRESBYOPIA
We want to answer the frequently asked questions about presbyopia posed by our patients who suffer from presbyopia or eyestrain.
1) How do I know if I have tired eyes?
One of the first symptoms is difficulty focusing on nearby objects, needing to move them away to see them clearly, or blurred vision. Visual fatigue, redness, stinging and heaviness of the eyes, headache, etc. are also usually manifested.
2) At what age is it common to start seeing badly up close?
Usually, between the ages of 40 and 45, although the development of this visual condition is progressive. It can vary, from its onset around the age of 40 to approximately 60, at which time presbyopia usually stabilizes.
3) I start to notice that I have a hard time reading the newspaper or looking at the screen of my mobile phone and I would like to stop wearing glasses, what options do I have?
At Oftalmedic Salvà we offer you several surgical options of proven effectiveness, thanks to our cutting-edge technology: laser surgery and intraocular lens implantation. Your ophthalmologist will study your case in a personalized way and determine the most appropriate technique.
4) Can anyone have surgery for presbyopia?
It is always essential to go to a preoperative consultation so that the ophthalmologist can evaluate your case and know in detail your situation and needs by performing different tests.
5) Can I have surgery if I have myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism?
Yes, as long as the ophthalmologist determines it. In fact, in cases where the patient has a prescription defect associated with tired eyes, such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, it can be resolved in the same surgical procedure.
6) Will I feel pain during the operation?
Under no circumstances, since topical anesthesia is previously applied in the form of drops.
7) How long does the intervention take?
The procedure only takes a few minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. In the case of laser, both eyes are operated on at the same time, but in the case of intraocular lens implantation, the interventions are usually performed on different days.
8) After treatment, when will I be able to see well up close?
Generally, in 24-48 hours, the patient begins to see up close normally. However, you have to wait about 7 days to confirm the results in the recovery of near vision.
9) If I decide to have surgery, how long will it take me to return to my usual activity?
After an initial postoperative check-up, the patient can return home on the same day of their intervention and on their own feet. Of course, we recommend leaving the clinic with sunglasses.
To return to work, it is advisable to wait a week, although, if necessary, it is possible to do so in a couple of days (in case of favorable evolution).
For the performance of certain sports activities such as contact sports, swimming, etc., it is advisable to wait approximately one month after the intervention, although the time may decrease depending on the technique used.
For everyday activities, such as watching TV or reading, there is no need to wait, although it will depend on the patient’s comfort.
10) Can presbyopia be prevented?
To date, there is no preventive treatment for presbyopia as it is a visual problem associated with age and natural aging. However, there are different solutions to correct it that will help you regain comfortable vision at any distance.
