Presbyopia surgery with intraocular lens

¿Qué son las lentes?

Currently, presbyopia is treatable and surgically correctable in most cases. The patient who has this visual condition and wants to do without the dependence on near glasses has two effective alternatives for the treatment of tired eyes. On the one hand, laser refractive surgery applied to the cornea (presbylasik and presbyfemtolasik). On the other hand, presbyopia surgery with an intraocular lens (refractive lens).

In any case, it will be the specialist in Ophthalmology who will determine the most appropriate technique for each patient after an exhaustive preoperative study.

It should be remembered that the progressive decrease in the ability to focus at close distances, known as eyestrain or presbyopia, is considered a natural process. This occurs when you reach an average age and increases over time.

When the ophthalmologist determines that the patient is not a suitable candidate for the laser option due to the anatomical characteristics of their eye (poor corneal thickness, high prescription, among other factors) and/or their age, there are other options such as presbyopia surgery with an intraocular lens.

ADVANTAGES OF REFRACTIVE LENSECTOMY OR CLEAR LENS SURGERY FOR THE PATIENT
  • It eliminates the need for optical correction (glasses or contact lenses) to see at all distances (distance vision, intermediate vision and near vision).
  • It corrects previous refractive errors that the patient has such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, in a single intervention, thanks to the implantation of an intraocular lens with the prescription that each patient needs.
  • It prevents the development of cataracts in the future since the transparent lens (that natural lens that later becomes the cataract) is removed and replaced by an artificial intraocular lens that restores sharpness to vision.

Currently, cataracts tend to be treated in earlier stages and not wait until they are too “mature”, in order to avoid a significant deterioration of vision due to the loss of transparency of the lens.

Smart operating room:
Say goodbye to glasses with the best technology

The Smart Operating Room allows interconnection between all the teams involved in the surgery process. As a result, it offers fast, safe, and completely personalized surgeries.

In the case of presbyopia surgery with an intraocular lens, thanks to the Smart Operating Room, the diagnostic equipment (Argos biometer) detects and measures all the ocular structures, creating a “3D reconstruction” of the patient’s eye and making an exact calculation of the power needed for the intraocular lens. After all this information is obtained, it is transmitted directly to the smart microscope. This has an image guidance system (Verion) that assists the surgeon in orienting the lens on the correct axis, an issue especially relevant in the case of patients with astigmatism. In this way, together with the phacoemulsifier (Veritas) and the femtosecond laser (Catalys), the presbyopia intervention with an intraocular lens is carried out with unprecedented accuracy and in a way that is absolutely adapted to the specific needs of each patient.

This technology, pioneering and unique in the Balearic Islands, provides greater precision and absolute personalisation to these interventions, offering “tailor-made” and robotic eye surgeries, in which there is more safety and less dependence on the human factor.

YOUR PRESBYOPIA OPERATION STEP BY STEP

After the application of anaesthetic drops topically, phacoemulsification (fragmentation of the lens) is carried out with assistance from femtosecond laser or ultrasound. Next, the intraocular lens is implanted, whose power is calculated by means of a detailed preliminary study according to the refractive error to be corrected.

As a result of this surgical procedure, it is possible to compensate for the loss of focusing ability caused by tired eyes. In addition, other refractive errors that may be associated with it are simultaneously corrected.

It is a minimally invasive surgery, similar to cataract surgery. It consists of replacing the transparent lens (it has not yet been opaqued) with a graduated intraocular lens to correct the dysfunction of the lens detected. Presbyopia surgery with an intraocular lens does not require hospitalization and allows you to resume daily activities such as driving, watching television, computer screen, mobile phone, or reading the newspaper, without having to wear glasses again.

Trifocal intraocular lenses

Currently, the appearance of the new trifocal lenses (with three points of focus) for the treatment of presbyopia represents a great advance compared to the previous ones, bifocal lenses (only for near and distance vision), due to their versatility and their similarity to the natural lens of the eye, which is the crystalline lens. They are specially designed to obtain good vision at all distances (near, intermediate and far).

Thanks to the different models on the market, we personalize each case, offering the patient the best alternative.
