Refractive surgery

Refractive Surgery

They are different surgical solutions to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism as an alternative to glasses or contact lenses.

What is it

Refractive surgery is the set of surgical techniques used to correct different ametropia such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

These are various visual anomalies that make it difficult for the eye to project images sent through the cornea and lens correctly onto the retina. This process is known as refraction.

In a normal eye, the images that reach the retina are focused directly on it, obtaining perfect vision. Conversely, when images converge at a point outside the retina, there is an altered perception of them and, consequently, vision becomes blurred.

When this happens, the eye has a refractive error. It is then that the patient, advised by their specialist, should consider the use of glasses or contact lenses, or opt for an alternative surgical solution adapted to their particular case.

Dr. Juan Sánchez explains what refractive surgery is.

Treatment

At Oftalmedic Salvà we offer you different surgical options to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, which will allow you to eliminate dependence on glasses and contact lenses in an effective and safe way.

This type of surgery is also indicated for cases of presbyopia or eyestrain.

To solve these refractive errors, two main procedures are applied: surgery with excimer laser and the implantation of phakic intraocular lenses (usually, ICL® lenses).

In a first preoperative consultation, the ophthalmologist will study your case in a personalized and detailed way, in order to evaluate and determine the most appropriate laser procedure or technique that best suits your situation and needs.

Intraocular lenses

When the ophthalmologist determines that the patient is not a suitable candidate for laser surgery, there is another alternative option such as refractive surgery with an intraocular lens (ICL).

ICL lenses are a recommended option for patients who have not yet developed eyestrain (especially young people between 20 and 40 years old) or for those with a high prescription.

Smart Operating Room:

The best technology to say goodbye to glasses

The Smart Operating Room is a great technological advance that has come to revolutionize eye surgeries and maximize their precision and level of customization. These objectives are achieved thanks to the interconnection between all the equipment involved in the surgery process, from diagnostic equipment to surgical equipment and laser equipment.

The intervention in the Smart Operating Room is fast, safe and personalized according to the specific needs of each person.

Through the Smart Operating Room, all the steps of the intervention are connected to each other:

  • Step 1: Diagnostic tests. Firstly, a series of diagnostic tests are carried out with state-of-the-art equipment, in order to collect all the necessary information about the patient and their ocular anatomy (corneal curvature, size of the eye, thickness of the lens, etc.).
  • Step 2: Automatic data transmission. The data collected is transmitted via Wi-Fi to the Smart Operating Room. This fact brings more effective, predictable and safer results.
  • Step 3: Patient recognition and personalization of procedures. Once they have received the information wirelessly, the systems that make up the Smart Operating Room recognise the patient and act according to the particular needs of their eye, adapting and optimising the procedures in each intervention and offering “tailor-made” surgeries.

Thus, the Smart Operating Room constitutes a network of connected systems that acts as a guide for the surgeon. Thanks to this technology, procedures are performed with maximum precision and safety, obtaining optimal visual results for patients.
